GTI-ICAA believes it is important to follow this case because hydrocarbon investment in areas of invaluable biodiversity and world importance, such as the Bahuaja – Sonene National Park, constitute a grave threat to conservation efforts.

The case

In 2007, the government in Peru prepared a draft law to reduce the size of the Bahuaja – Sonene National Park, eliminating more than two hundred thousand hectares for hydrocarbon exploration and exploitation. However, due to informational campaigns organized by civil society and large community support, this bill was stopped.

Bahuaja - Sonene National Park, located in the Amazon region of Madre de Dios and Puno.
