Multimodal Axis Manta - Manaos
Project purpose
Multimodal Axis Manta - Manaos facilitates international trade, allowing the transfer of Brazilian goods to the coast of the Pacific Ocean, and thus to markets in Asia and the United States. It is presented as an alternative to the Panama Canal for those who traverse the continent from the Atlantic to the Pacific since it takes about less than 30 days compared to an average of 45 days via the Panama Canal.
Location
The project links the port of Esmeraldas (Esmeraldas province) and Manta (Manabi Province) with the town of Francisco de Orellana (Orellana Province), in Ecuador. The Napo River will meet the Amazon river and continue along Peru up to Manaus, Brazil.
Why does ICAA give an indirect follow-up to this project?
This is a megaproject that analyzes the possibility of implementing environmental management tools effectively. The proposed multimodal Manta Manaos axis affects important areas of the Amazon, especially in National Park Yasuní, where there are indigenous peoples who occupy the area.
