Strengthening Environmental Management in Madre de Dios, Peru and Pando, Boliva

The M-P consortium aims to reduce threats to biodiversity loss from deforestation and poorly planned infrastructure projects in the Madre de Dios and Pando regions of Peru and Bolivia.

The consortium is working to build local, national, and international collaboration through the integrated management of watersheds and prioritizing the maintenance and restoration of ecosystems. As part of this process, the consortium is investing in capacity building in primary school and university education, as well as institutional strengthening, with aims to improve long term environmental management.

Objective

Contribute to the development of participatory management plans for shared sub-river basins and influential corridors between Peru and Bolivia.

Who is involved?

The consortium is led by the University of Florida (UF) and consists of Herencia and the Universidad Amazónica de Pando (UAP) in Bolivia, in addition to the Universidad Nacional Amazonica de Madre de Dios (UNAM) and the National Institute for Development -- Special Project in Madre de Dios (PEMD - GOREMAD), and the Woods Hole Research Center (WHRC) in Peru.

Who do they work with?

The consortium works with universities and other educational institutions, indigenous and local organizations, local authorities, and civil society.

Where do they work?

The major areas are the Madre de Dios region of Peru and the Pando region of Bolivia.

ICAA goals

  • Improve the environmental management of the Acre, Abuna, and Tahuamanu river basins in Peru and Bolivia.
  •  Identify priority sub basins in the Acre River Basin.
  • Develop management plans for watersheds.
  •  Collect information, design scenarios, and plan collaboratively with governments and civil society in Madre de Dios and Pando to develop mitigation plans for the impacts of infrastructure projects.
  • Promote participatory planning and the incorporation of mitigation plans in infrastructure development.
  • Build environmental management capacities among government personnel, community leaders, and students.
