Maintaining a regional focus, ICAA seeks to strengthen and complement some of the most important ongoing conservation efforts through the work of four Conservation Consortia. Conserving and managing national parks, like Madidi (Bolivia) and Manu (Peru), which contain more species plants and animals than found in entire countries, collaborating with Indigenous populations, such as the Cofan people in Ecuador, and assisting Colombian farmers with cultivation and product marketing, are just a few of the unique ways ICAA is working towards a vision of conservation that promotes partnerships, knowledge sharing, and conservation capacity throughout the region.
ICAA's Strategic Principles:
- Maintain a regional conservation focus
- Prioritize strategic geographic regions in the Andean Amazon
- Increase coordination between 20 partner institutions
- Build partner knowledge and create greater awareness around priority conservation themes
- Coordinate with other regional networks and initiatives
- Pursue sustainable funding
•Results Framework The overarching ICAA result (or objective) is: “Amazonian networks & institutions strengthened to improve conservation." Three main Intermediate Results (IRs) contribute to this outcome:
IR 1: Capacity of Amazonian institutions & networks improved for conservation and organizational development. (Shared Indicators 1, 2 and 3)
IR 2: Implementation of sustainable Amazonian policies improved. (Shared Indicators 4 and 5)
IR 3: Funding for ICAA partner organizations increased. (Shared Indicator 6)
•Conservation Consortia The ICAA Conservation Consortia promote best conservation practices in the Andean Amazon region. The consortia bring together NGOs, indigenous organizations, scientific institutions, universities, and government agencies according to their geographic and professional focus to work towards their shared goals of building local conservational capacity and partnerships. This effort involves strengthening environmental management, enhancing participatory planning, and improving resource use towards a vision of sustainable development. There are four Conservation Consortia: Conserving the Madidi-Manu Landscape of Bolivia and Peru (MMCC), Indigenous Landscapes (IL), Strengthening Environmental Management in Madre de Dios, Peru and Pando, Bolivia (M-P), and Sustainable Livelihoods in the Western Amazon (SL).
• Promoting Synergies: The Support Unit The ICAA Support Unit works to ensure that the varied and comprehensive conservation strategies advanced by the Consortia add up to more than the sum of their parts by coordinating and fostering joint efforts among Conservation Consortia, as well as promoting alliances and networks, and supporting program administration. The Support Unit also promotes knowledge management, communications, training and performance monitoring efforts, as well as fostering conservation alliances and managing a small grants program.
